bullet John BLUBAUGH(881) (882)(2) (883)(884) (371) died in 1819 in , Sommerset County, Pennsylvania. He was born 1752 or near 1755 in Maryland. He died 1822 (before JUL 1825).

JOHN BLUBAUGH I is the primary ancestor as far as we know at this time. It is from him that all the generations listed in this book are derived. He was born sometime after 1752, probably near 1755. It is not known from where he originated nor in what country he was born. He lived in Maryland and his father-in-law, Ralph Logsdon, was a settler at Mt. Savage, MD. In later years John and his wife lived in Southhampton Township, Sommerset County PA. A petition for appraisal of his estate was found listing his children
and heirs. He died leaving no will and there were two children needing care. Two tracts of land, one containing 93 acres and the other 35, were to be appraised to determine if a son, George, and a daughter, Peggy, could be cared for. Relationship between him and other Blubaughs, with variations in spelling of the surname, is not known. Those found include a Jacob in Frederick County MD in a 1778 land transaction, a Simon in Bedford County PA land records of 1771-1773, and a Benjamin listed in tax records of 1799 in Adams County PA. The following is from a Logsdon History, his wife's family. " The first Logsdon ancestor of whom we have any definite record was that of William Logsdon Sr. , who is reputed to have been born in North Ireland in the year 1652. he came to America in 1673 with six other young men who had secured passage on a sailing vessel, commanded by Capt. Samuel Smith and bound for the Virginia Colony. When the ship was almost ready to cast anchor on the Virginia coast, a strong southern wind or hurricane blew the ship far up into Chesapeake Bay. Finally the ship cast anchor at the mouth of the Patapsco River in Maryland, near the present city of Baltimore. Before embarking for America, William Logsdon and the other young men agreed with Capt. Smith that each should work four years to pay for their passage across tha Atlantic Ocean. Upon their arrival, their services were sold to different tobacco planters living along the Patapsco River in Maryland. After Willliam had served his four years of indenturedship, he went farther up the river and secured a 300 acre tract of land near the southern border of Pennsylvania, which he named "Brotherly Love." Here, amid the primeval forest, on the bank of a large tributary of the river which was later called Big Pipe Creek, he cleared away some of the forest and erected such buildings as needed by the tobacco planters of his day, In the beginning William seemed to have raised only such crops as were needed for food and forage for his livestock. After a few years, he decided to make tobacco his chief crop. This is proven by the legal records which show that he brought suit against a contracter who failed to erect his tobacco shed according to the contract previously signed. During this period William lived the life of a bachelor, until one day in the year 1702 a ship came up the river and cast anchor not many miles from his plantation. Aboard this ship were several young women who had been brought across the ocean to become the wives of the unmarried planters in that section of Maryland. Some of them had come of their own free choice while others had been kidnapped and brought aboard against their will. Aparently, William, after hearing of the ship's arrival, went immediatly to the place of the ship's anchorage and with the permission of the ship's captain, went aboard and selected one of ther young women for his future wife. He chose for his bride-to-be an Irish lass, a Catholic girl, who had previosly been kidnapped on the southern coast of Ireland. Her name was Honora O'Flynn. The O'Flynn family lived in Kerry County on the the southwest coast of Ireland. She and William were married soon afterwards in a quaint little chapel not far from his own plantation, "Brotherly Love." It must have been a thrilling experience for Honora to become a mistress of such a beautiful place. In the years following their marriage, seven children were born to this union. The youngest child, John, was born in 1716. On October 9, 1735, John married Margaret Wooley in St. Paul's Church in Baltimore. According to a number of court documents, John was a prominent surveyor, who lived on his homestead, "Fanny's Meadow," now a part of the town Westminster, Maryland. John died in October 1797 without having made a will to cover his property. His wife, Margaret, seems to have preceded him in death between 1781 and 1787. John Logsdon Sr. and Margaret Wooley were blessed with eight children who reached maturity. One of the five sons, Ralph, possibly the youngest, who was born prior to 1755, marrried Mary Durbin, his first cousin, the daughter of his father's sister Ann Logsdon and Samuel Durbin. Ralph Logsdon was listed as settler in Mt. Savage, Maryland prior to 1787. In 1775 he is an associator in the Frederick County "Committee of Observation." The 1800 Federal Census of Alleghany County, Maryland, briefly described
Ralph Logsdon as the father of two sons (not named) and four daughters. Ralph's will published in Cumberland, Maryland, on June 24, 1818, names his wife, Mary, and six daughters. One of those daughters mentioned by name is Jememiah, also knowm as Anjemiah. According to a marriage record in Old Record Hall, Annapolis, Maryland, Jememiah Logsdon, daughter of Ralph Logsdon, living in Frederick County, married John Blubaugh I, around the time of the Revolutionary War Period (1775-1783). Not much is known about John Blubaugh I prior to his marriage. Later he moved his family to a farm in Southhapton Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, where he died shortly before July 1825. The Somerset Court records list three daughters and seven sons by name. The family of John I and Ann Jememiah Blubaugh is by far the largest and best documented Blubaugh family in the United States. Any Blubaugh families not tieing in direct line with this family are listed as a separate branch in this history." The book "A Centennial Biographical History of Knox County (Ohio)," records in the writeup of Stephen Blubaugh that his granfather, John Blubaugh I, was "born in Germany, but when a young man he came to the United States, locating in Maryland, where he spent the remainder of his life, passing away in death when about fifty years of age.
