James H. Stanton
Jim Stanton was born to Herbert J. and Florence L. Meyers Stanton on June 20 1929 in Columbus, Ohio Jim was the second of three Stanton Children, Louise being the oldest , and Donald the youngest. Jim had somewhat of a difficult childhood until he was about thirteen years old. He was bothered with a continuous pain in one of his legs. His mother took him to several Doctors in hopes a solution to the pain could be found. One Doctor said it was his teeth and one was sure it was his tonsils. The tonsils were removed. The best solution from a doctor they heard was he needed a shot of liver extract. The problem was remained, Jim' s mother saw an article in the daily newspaper about two orthopedic surgeons. They were rated near the top doctors in the world. Jim's mother called and made an appointment with one of them At the appointment the Doctor had Jim walk across the room and turn and come back to him. The Doctor ran his two fingers up the inside of his thigh. He scheduled surgery immediately. A tumor the size of a small coconut was removed from his leg. They determined he would have lost his leg if they had waited much longer in doing the surgery. Jim went on to be the center on the basketball team , first baseman on the base ball team at Powell High School. He was the best player on the volleyball team. Jim was Valedictorian of his high school class. Jim's father was furloughed from the Pennsylvania Railroad at the beginning of the Great depression. He reverted back to his old profession of being a barber. He owned Herb's Barber Shop in Linden. A haircut was only 25 cents in those days. The Stanton Family was never on any kind o public assistance during the depression. They had a large garden and his mother filled a lot of mason canning jars with food. The Stanton family lived near the Ohio State Fair Grounds until 1937. Jim's mother and dad made a decision to move to a farm in Madison County on Route 40 at the Clark County line. This was in June of 1938. Page2 of 8 The rented farm had no electricity , inside plumbing and no running water. The water had to be carried from a spring about thousand feet away. The kitchen stove was wood burning with a water reservoir on the side. The house was heated by one coal burning stove in the living room. The farm did not have any farm machinery nor any livestock. There were twenty acres of corn ( purple) already planted and the hay was ready to be cut. Jim's dad bought a mowing machine, a dump rake, a model T truck, two milk cows, a bunch of sheep, and one hog. The mowing machine was pulled with the car and the rake with the truck . About fifty tons of hay was put in the barn by this method . The corn crop was harvested by hand in the fall. In the fall the Stanton children started to school in Summerford, Ohio. The school was a two room two story building. Grades one thru four were on the first floor with each grade in a designated row. Grades five thru eight were on the second floor. The High school was located in London , Ohio. There were many memories left in Summerford when the Stantons moved in with Jim's Grandfather Meyers in Linworth about March 1, 1939. The lease on the farm expired. His Grandfather lived on a small farm located where St. Peters Catholic Church is located today. The main reason for moving closer to Columbus was Jim's dad had a chance to be called back to the job, he had before the depression, with the Pennsylvania Railroad. The saying two families can't live under the same roof proved to be true, we soon moved again. During the summer Jim's father bought a thirty acre farm on the south side of Powell, Ohio. It was a real handyman's special, no fences, no buildings, no electricity , no indoor plumbing , but it had plenty of blackberry briers The small animals were moved to the new farm in the back seat of the car. Jim and Don led the two milk cows from where St. Peter Catholic Church is to one mile south of Powell. It took them about three hours. page 3 of 8 The best thing about the new farm was it had a creak flowing thru it. There was one deep hole of water about four feet deep. This became the Stanton Swimming Hole. It was also known as Bare Butt Beech. Eventually every boy and a few girls would become familiar with this body of water. The Stanton brothers used it in the summer for their bathtub. After a couple years later electricity was put in the house, and inside plumbing was installed by Jim's dad. Jim and Don were his reluctant helpers. Jim's dad and uncle owned a few rental properties. The boys learned from a young age what hard work was, taking care of the properties. His uncle went into the military in 1943. The brothers helped with the rental properties. At this time Jim's Dad was working full time for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He would be home for eight hours and then be gone for two days on the train to Toledo or Sandusky. This routine continued until he retired. This routine put the burden of the farm and the raising of the three children on Jim's mother. She did all of the interior painting of the house and she also helped decorate the rental properties. She would can several hundred jars of meat and vegetables a year. One year she traded a canary that she raised, to a neighbor for one dozen turkey eggs. This trade developed into a five hundred per year turkey business. She did most of the work. She did have one good helper, Wimpy the family Collie dog. The turkeys were range raised in a different field each year. This is where Wimpy would drive five hundred dumb turkeys thru a three foot gate into an enclosure every night for their protection. She also had time to be a Girl's 4H leader .She made all Louise's and her own clothes. Most of the time there was only one automobile in the family. That automobile was at the railroad yard where the trains departed. In the fall the Stanton Children started to Powell School, Louise was in the sixth grade, Jim was in the fifth grade and Don was in the third grade. Many of the friends made at Powell remained their friends for life.. Jim did things the things the average boy would do. He had a bicycle, was a 4H club member, showed dairy and beef cattle at the fair. He loved to swim and loved the water. A fisherman he was not. Jim was a member of a beef club for one year. Jim met his friend Buster, a Black Angus Steer. The story of Buster is part of Jim's life. page 4 of 8 Jim was not an angel during Halloween. He and his brother were a little mischievous. Jim was very active in high school. H e was a member of the baseball ,basket ball, and the volleyball teams. He had the leading roll in his junior and senior class plays. He excelled in math and science . He favorite subject was chemistry . Jim was the president of his senior class. He was the Valetudinarian of his graduating class of 1947 Mr. O.H. Gibson , one of his teachers , and a Lt. Colonel in the Ohio National Guard had some influence on Jim, and he joined the National Guard, later. Jim had several jobs while he was in school. He was a guide at the Olentangy Caverns on Saturday ,Sunday and holidays for $1.50 per day. During the week he mowed grass and did other odd jobs for the owner Mr. Richard Leach.. Jim worked on different farms. He worked for a farm fence company and a couple summers and working as a laborer for a construction company. The jobs he had were hard work. In September of 1947 Jin enrolled at the Ohio State University majoring in chemistry. chemistry. Jim's transportation to O.S.U. was in a 1929 Model A Ford coupe . He spent many of his weekends working on it. In the fall of 1948 the Stantons sold the farm in Powell and moved to Columbus Jim left the farm but the farm didn't leave Jim. They were ready for the change, especially his mother. Jim had public transportation to O.S.U. He took the Cleveland Avenue bus ,transferred to the Fifth Avenue to O.S.U. They only lived in the Linden Area a short time until they moved to the Grandview Area on Virginia Avenue. They were about two miles from the O.S.U. Jims Brother Don was married in January of 1951. Jim was his best man. Don would be Jim's best man a few years later. Jim enlisted in the National Guard while he was in college. Jim , being the person he was, took everything serious. He did the same in the Guard. He advanced to become a First Lieutenant in the Ohio and Michigan National Guard. He served as an acting Company Commander at times. page 5 of 8 Jim 's unit was called to active duty during the prison riots during the early 1950's . Jim told a story about prisoners he was guarding. They were unloading two railroad cars of coal. One group bet they could unload their car of coal before the other group. Their bet was the group that lost forfeited their pie to the winning team at dinner that evening. Jim thought it was wonderful that even prisoners made the work a purpose. Jim remained in the National for about nine years until he found what military politics were. No one ever accused Jim of being a politician . In college Jim was pursuing a degree in Chemistry until he took the required course in German language. He took it twice and lost. It didn't matter he was getting "A" in chemistry .. Jim was working part time at The Fairmomt Creamery while going to school . He changed his major to Dairy Science. German was not required for Dairy Science. Jim received his degree in Dairy Science from the Ohio State University Jim graduated from the Ohio State University X .. The Sanitary Dairy Co, offered Jim a position as a Dairy Technician in Canton, Ohio. Jim became Company Commander of a National Guard Company in Canton Jim's employment in Canton was not all work. He met the Executive Director of the Dairy Council of Stark County District , Canton ,Ohio. Her name was Miss Blanche Kelley. Miss Kelly was born , raised and educated in South, Carolina . Miss. Kelley became Mrs. James Stanton H. Stanton June 9, 1956. Jim and Blanche lived in Canton until X They moved to Muskegon . Michigan for Jim to start his new lob as Dairy Plant Manager. What Jim didn't know was the plant had a total of six plant managers in the past three years. The pant union was the teamsters. The union reject to every change Jim made. Jim was feeling down one day when the manager of all the milk delivery section ask him to go fishing with him. The manager told Jim that you cant worry and fish at the same time . Jim became an avid fisherman soon after that . page 6of 9 when Jim would get down , his new friend would take him fishing. Jim stayed in that job for about three years . When left the Union Steward told Jim he was tough but fair. Jim learned a lot about management in those three years. Jim an Blanche relocated to Hickory, North Carolina . He assumed the Plant Managers Position of a Dairy Plant. Jim and Blanche lived in Hickory until X .. They moved to Wyandotte , Michigan inX .. Jim accepted a position in the Research Department of Wyandotte Chemical Co. Jim and Blanche lived in an apartment until they afford a home on Grosse Ile . In this home Jim could show his farm abilities with plants, bushes, and planted tulips in ever vacant spot in his yard. Jim and Blanche bought their first Karen Terrier dog. This was his livestock. They had several Karen Terrier dogs thru the years. Their last one died a couple years ago. Blanche taught Home Economics in the Flat Rock Schools until she retired. Blanche could or should write a book on her experiences being a School Teacher. Jim worked on chemicals used for cleaning in the food industry. He traveled to several food processing plant all over North and Central America to help solve their cleaning problems. Anheiser Busch in Columbus, Ohio. Miller Brewing Co., Hershey Chocolate Co. were only a few of his clients. Jim need to have an interpreter sever times in Canada and Central America Jim made several trips to Germany when the Company was owned by B.S.A.F. He authored several papers about the food industry. One of his papers was published in five different languages. He lectured at several university food science departments. This included The Ohio State University. He owned several patients related to the food industry. page 7of 8 Jim eventually become the head of the Department . He had several chemist with their PHD degree reporting to him. Jim ended up being the head chemist. If you can't run through them run around them to get to your goal. This is what he did Jim retired from the company when it's name was Diversifed Wyandotte . in X Jim and Blanch being tired of Michigan cold winters decide to relocate south. They ended up building a new house in Peachtree City, Georgia . It took some time for Jim to become a Georgian . He referred to the South as a third world country. Jim and Blanche home is on the lake shore. His new farm animals were ducks from the lake. His purpose in life was to take care of the ducks. He fed them daily and hired someone to feed them when he could not be there. Jim planted various plants around their new home . He had to make some changes due to new climate and soil. Ohio and Michigan are some what different . What grew was beautiful. Peachtree City is a unique layout . There are over eighty miles of golf paths that wind in and out thru the town. One of the paths is about fifty feet in back of their home. You can get in your golf cart and go to the movie, the shopping center, restaurant, golf course or one of the schools . Children must be fourteen to drive gulf carts by themselves. The high school has parking lot with four hundred spaces for golf carts only. All golf carts must be electric powered. Jim and Blanche owned a cart for the first few they lived there, but sold it. When they don't have anything to do they can sit on their deck and watch the people walk or ride by. Jim and Blanche have mad many friends in while in Peachtree City. Jim was diagnosed with cancer and has lived with it very well. As the cancer progressed they started making plans for the end . They bought a condo in Friendship Village at Dublin. It was to built in three years, but is not built due to construction problems. They bought cemetery lots in Columbus and made their funeral arrangements at the same time. page 8 of 8 Jim wanted to come home to central Ohio for his final resting place. They made funeral arrangements with John Quint Funeral Home for two reasons, one is his mother and father were here, two is this is only two blocks from where he lived when he graduated from Ohio State University . This is where he left home to go out into the real world. They made the decision, since their condo would ready for some time, they would stay in the comfort their beautiful home in Peachtree, City until the end. James H. Stanton As I knew Him Donald J. Stanton You may think you know a person, but do you ? Writing a short introduction about my Brother Jim I found I knew very little about him. I compiled eight pages of information about him. It would take several thousand pages to describe him. Every person he made contact with could write a book about him. I tried to be accurate and truthful about Jim Stanton. Next fall I will miss calling him on the telephone or sending him articles from the Columbus Dispatch about his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes. My last visit with him in March, 2007 we said good bye with the tears in our eyes. Jim said as I was leaving to go home , " Don we all must go sometime".
